Our Mentors & Mentees
The Standing Tall program trains caring community volunteers to become mentors to students at the Heywood and District Secondary College. Our mentors come from various industries and backgrounds, providing a wealth of knowledge and experience. They are committed to giving back and helping our students realise their potential.

A Mentor:
- Is a compassionate community member who will provide a structured and safe environment to build a trusting mentoring relationship
- Will support our students to take full advantage of what is offered here at school.
- Will build on their mentee’s strengths, talents, leadership skills, culture and identity and create asset building moments.
- Assists in the social and emotional development of a young person.
- Creates social connections in the community and opens their mentee’s mind to a world of possibilities.
- A mentor allows our students to be themselves. Whoever that may be.
Our Mentees:
Students are accepted to the program for various reasons:
- To build on their leadership skills
- To help them grow self-confidence and resilience
- Assist them to engage in their education
- Give assistance with goal setting and aspiration
- Provide them a trusted adult outside the family to talk to
Mentoring assists students to:
- Enjoy their time at school.
- Reduce absenteeism by participants
- Build self-esteem and resilience through support and encouragement
- Foster a sense of belonging
- Reduce the risk of early disengagement from education, whilst encouraging the continuation of educational pathways to further study or engagement in work
